Sheehanigans

By: Publius in Gulf War II, Democratic Party, Liberals on 7:20 am

At what point is enough truly enough? If Mrs. Sheehan represents the democrats core, constituency, it is no wonder why Republicans enjoy such comfortable positions and distance themselves at every election. In case you missed the story,

Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a fallen soldier in Iraq who reinvigorated the anti-war movement, was arrested and removed from the House gallery Tuesday night just before President Bush’s State of the Union address, a police spokeswoman said.
Sheehan, who was invited to attend the speech by Rep. Lynn Woolsey, D- Calif., was charged with demonstrating in the Capitol building, said Capitol Police Sgt. Kimberly Schneider. The charge was later changed to unlawful conduct, Schneider said. Both charges are misdemeanors.
Sheehan was taken in handcuffs from the Capitol to police headquarters a few blocks away. Her case was processed as Bush spoke.
Schneider said Sheehan had worn a T-shirt with an anti-war slogan to the speech and covered it up until she took her seat. Police warned her that such displays were not allowed, but she did not respond, the spokeswoman said.
Police handcuffed Sheehan and removed her from the gallery before Bush arrived. Sheehan was to be released on her own recognizance, Schneider said.
“I’m proud that Cindy’s my guest tonight,” Woolsey said in an interview before the speech. “She has made a difference in the debate to bring our troops home from Iraq.”

Notice that Representative Woosley made these comments before the SOTU. Would such a fine display of class invigorate a sense of pride in others? I found it absolutely deplorable for Cindy Sheehan to pervert such a monumental event into cheap, petty antics of her own selfish desires. What many protestors such as Sheehan do not understand is that there are times and venues for such protests. Michelle Malkin has more and it even seems that Representative Woosley may have played a part in this ‘cheap moonbat spectacle.

you call the SOTU a “monumental event” and imply that it is no place for politics — but that’s exactly what goes on there. bush basically laid out the plan on which REP are going to run in the mid-term elections. i say what better time to question the decisions of an Administration than when the President is about to offer support for his decisions.

it is hard to believe that they can arrest her for wearing an Anti-War Shirt, despite the occasion… i would like to see the law.

the question that remains, however, is whether she would have been arrested if she had worn a PRO-WAR shirt. if the answer is NO, then she was arrested merely because of the content of her speech — you know as well as i do that you cannot do that.

Shane, you need to keep up with the news better, son. Drudge is reporting that IN ADDITION to Cindy Sheehan, the wife of a REPUBLICAN representative was ejected for wearing a “Support the Troops” t-shirt.

Additionally, DURING CLINTON’S TENURE, a man was ejected from the gallery for wearing a t-shirt which read “Clinton doesn’t inhale, he sucks”.

Evidently the First Amendment is suspended in the capitol gallery. On one hand I don’t care much for that, but on the other hand why throw fuel on the fire below? At any rate the issue you presented is fairness to both sides, and it appears that both sides are treated identically.
