Veto?

By: Publius in Domestic Issues, National Security on 3:12 pm

President Bush obviously feels strongly about the move by an Arab company based out of the United Arab Emirates to purchase six American seaports. President Bush, aboard Air Force One made the following statements,

He said he would veto any legislation to hold up deal and warned the United States was sending ‘mixed signals’ by going after a company from the Middle East when nothing was said when a British company was in charge… Lawmakers, he said, must ’step up and explain why a Middle Eastern company is held to a different standard…I don’t view it as a political fight’ (Drudge Report)

It is quite curious that President Bush has decided to stake a claim on this particular issue. Over the course of his 5+ years in the Oval Office, President Bush has been quite reluctant to veto measures on any matter. Yet, on something such as this, President Bush has drawn a clear line in the sand.

Based upon what your humble pundit has put together, thus far, I find the position of President Reagan to be quite appealling at this point in time: “Trust, but verify.” And, it seems as though Senate Majority Leader Frist has the same intents and purposes.
