No News Means Good News

By: Publius in Economics, GOP, Domestic Issues, MSM on 2:42 pm

Ever wonder why here in the last several months, why we have not heard or discussed the economy to a great extent? Well, consider this, a Republican is in the White House, and the economic indicators continue to demonstrate that the economy is in great shape. All of this, despite the September 11th attacks, despite domestic threats at home and abroad, despite an ongoing war, etc. etc. etc.

As Blogs for Bush notes,

The Fourth Quarter’s GDP was revised upwardAccording to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, 41 states increased employment last month, and over the year, 48 states ihave increased employment. Last week, intial jobless claims fell by about 10,000… and Nasdaq hit its highest in over 5 years

Viva la Revolucion?

By: Publius in Domestic Issues, National Security, MSM, Immigration on 9:01 am

Something that the MSM fails to illuminate about the student protests transpiring in California. This is what your humble pundit deplores. Much of what has been bantered about pertaining to these protests centers around these individuals being the “backbone” of America and how immigrants have shaped this country throughout our history.

Yet, what is forgotten, or blatantly ignored, is the fact that the immigrants of the past came to America to begin anew and join this great nation. Contrast such with this decadent display of patriotism for Mexico. Not only are these lawbreakers granting higher authority to the Mexican flag, but they are spitting upon Old Glory.

I beg any of my readers to explain the rationale behind this, specifically, I would like to see someone logically defend such an action. I throw down the gauntlet for I firmly assert that there is none whatsoever.

I share the sentiment of Michelle Malkin,

I predict this stunt will be the nail in the coffin of any guest-worker/amnesty plan on the table in Washington. The image of the American flag subsumed by another and turned upside down on American soil is already spreading on Internet forums and via e-mail.

The battle for borders and immigration laws that actually mean something, however, hasn’t even begun.

Donkey Stomp,

It’s one thing to have pride for where you come from. However, this goes beyond being proud of their heritage. They disrepect the symbol of a country that they ran to for a better opportunity because their country could not provide that opportunity for them.

Euphoric Reality,

I spoke with the principal, Jeff Schwarz, of Montebello high school. He said that the students who did this to the flag were not from Montebello, but that there were about 800-1000 students from nearby Pioneer and El Rancho high schools that flooded his campus. Apparently, they were quite riotous nad almost pulled down efence to get on campus. There were only 6 police officers present. The police, nor the teachers on hand attempted to stop the students from violating the flag. The desecrated flag flew overhead while the 1000 students were on the campus and was not removed or corrected until after they left. When I asked, Mr. Schwarz said that the students were not interfered with for fear of retaliation. He said they would riot.

Wizbang!,

These protesters are saying that American laws and customs mean nothing to them; yet they demand to be supported by the American taxpayers.

Another Reason It’s Time For The Fair Tax

By Doug Patton, courtesy of GOPUSA.com
March 27, 2006

As April 15th approaches, millions of us are again poring over receipts, records and other information relevant to our federal income taxes. After getting everything in order, we will be forced by the complexity of the tax code to take it all to an accountant or other tax professional, who will spend a few very expensive hours working through a process our own government doesn’t even understand much of the time. Finally, our tax preparer will place in front of us a stack of papers, some of which we will be expected to sign.

Now, do you read every page in that stack, or do you simply place your signature, as I do, on the lines indicated by this individual in whom you have placed so much trust? Millions of us do it every year. But what if among those papers was a consent form to sell your personal information to third parties to market their products and services to you?

This is the convoluted reasoning of the Internal Revenue Service, where career bureaucrats believe that such conduct should be allowed. In fact, the IRS is proposing new rules that would permit tax preparers to sell your private financial information, right up to and including your actual tax return itself, to marketers and data brokers.

Currently, selling client information to third parties for marketing purposes is prohibited. That would change, however, under the proposed rule revision. And since this policy could only benefit the person buying or selling your information, with no imaginable benefit to you, the motivation to obtain permission by any deceptive means necessary seems extremely high. Incredibly, according to a recent article in the Philadelphia Inquirer, IRS officials characterize these changes as “housecleaning measures needed to update regulations adopted before it began accepting returns electronically.”

Had enough? There is a solution.

The time has come for Americans to demand that our elected representatives come to grips with the fact that the current federal income tax code is broken and cannot be fixed.

The time has come for all of us to admit to ourselves that this system has been patched and “repaired” far too many times since 1913, when the 16th Amendment brought us direct taxation on our production, with the IRS as its primary enforcement agency.

The time has come to abolish this gargantuan, intrusive, tyrannical bureaucracy, the primary purpose of which is to harass individual taxpayers, who in turn have to hire and trust others to interpret and navigate the treacherous waters of the federal tax laws.

The time has come for the Fair Tax, a consumption-based national sales tax to replace the federal income tax, thereby trading a trillion-dollar anchor for an economic supercharger.

Imagine what you could do for your family, your church, your community, your future, if you had no federal income taxes, including Social Security, withheld from your paycheck.

Imagine the magnet for business the United States of America would become without a corporate income tax.

Imagine if the imbedded corporate taxes driving the cost of every product and service you buy were gone.

In fact, imagine if discounts on consumer products offset the cost of all federal taxes, leaving consumers free to save, give and, well, consume.

Just imagine.

Replacing the burdensome federal income tax with a 23 percent (inclusive) national sales tax would give every American taxpayer an immediate pay raise by allowing us all to keep everything we earn. And since approximately 22 percent of the cost of every product and service we buy represents embedded corporate income tax, competition would drive the cost of everything down by an amount almost directly proportionate to the amount of the consumption tax. In other words, the cost of the sales tax would be offset completely by the discounts on virtually everything.

But the best part of implementing the Fair Tax is abolishing the IRS. No more receipts. No more mileage logs. No more fear of an audit. No more April 15th.

The proposed new regulations are just one more indication that the time has come to turn Americans loose from the bondage of an antiquated tax system that impedes productivity, punishes generosity and penalizes thrift.

“For His Own Security”

By: Publius in Foreign Affairs, Breaking News, Islam, Afghanistan, Religion on 6:49 pm

I cannot contemplate this form of barbarism. As much as we are told here in the United States, in spite of countless terrorist attacks, that Islam is the religion of peace and that we should not judge all for the sins of a few, we must endure these acts.

Islam as a collective, cohesive entit had the perfect oppurtunity to demonstrate their moderation. In Afghanistan, the cradle of the Taliban and al Qaeda, they could have shown the world that they fervently chose to rebuke the narrow, dogmatic thinking of the barbarians that sacked the World Trade Center. Yet, the citizens, in the form of a mob, led by radical clerics, choose to embrace some of these antiquities strung together as religious beliefs.

For now, the newly converted christian is safe….

Abdul Rahman, released from a maximum security jail outside Kabul late Monday, was being kept at a secure location for his own protection following calls for his execution, deputy attorney general Mohammad Ishaq Aliko said. “He is free now but he is being kept in a special place and that is only for his own security,” Aliko said. “He is under protection. The United Nations and the (Afghan) human rights commission are both aware and are involved.”Several diplomatic sources said he was being held at the United Nations compound in the capital, but the world body would not confirm this.An official said authorities were bracing for more protests after about 200 people demonstrated in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif Monday demanding Rahman’s execution in accordance with Sharia Islamic law.An official said authorities were bracing for more protests after about 200 people demonstrated in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif Monday demanding Rahman’s execution in accordance with Sharia Islamic law.No demonstrations were reported Tuesday but Afghans continued to demand that he be tried according to Sharia law, which says he should be sentenced to death unless he reverts to Islam.

Everyday Thoughts Collected,

… is Abdul Rahman?  He was released to his family (not cool since they were the ones who turned him in) and he just disappeared.  Apparently Abdul’s witness is having a positive effect on his fellow countrymen in Afghanistan, CNS reports that interest in Christianity is apparently increasing.

Andrew Card Resigns

By: Publius in GOP, MSM, Breaking News, Domestic Politics on 11:22 am

Does this not happen at a similar point in most Administrations? Yet, the MSM wants to report such as if this were the first time it has ever occurred.

WASHINGTON — White House chief of staff Andrew Card has resigned and will be replaced by budget director Josh Bolten, President Bush announced Tuesday.

“After five-and-a-half years, he thought it might be time to return to private life and this past weekend, I accepted Andy’s resignation,” Bush said in an announcement made from the Oval Office. “Andy Card has served me and our country in historic times,” including the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, economic ups and downs and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, Bush said.

Mourning Their Passing

By: Publius in Ronald Reagan, Breaking News on 11:08 am

From CNSNews.com,

President Reagan’s former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger has died at the age of 88. The news broke shortly after 11 a.m. EST Tuesday, one day after former Reagan aide Lyn Nofziger died of complications of kidney cancer at the age of 81. Nofziger served as communications director for then-Gov. Ronald Reagan, and he continued to advise Reagan the president. More to come.

Scalia and a Little Birdie

By: Publius in Signs of the Times, Religion on 6:34 pm

Your humble pundit really does not know what to make of the following story from NewsMax. More than likely it will just become more fodder for the liberal side of the blogosphere. Make no mistake, it involved a momentary lapse of what is commonly know as “common sense” on the part of the associate justice, but hopefully it will not become much ado about nothing.

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia startled reporters in Boston just minutes after attending a mass, by flipping a middle finger to his critics.

A Boston Herald reporter asked the 70-year-old conservative Roman Catholic if he faces much questioning over impartiality when it comes to issues separating church and state.

You know what I say to those people? Scalia replied, making the obscene gesture and explaining That’s Sicilian.

The 20-year veteran of the high court was caught making the gesture by a photographer with The Pilot, the Archdiocese of Boston’s newspaper . Don’t publish that, Scalia told the photographer, the Herald said.

He was attending a special mass for lawyers and politicians at Cathedral of the Holy Cross, and afterward was the keynote speaker at the Catholic Lawyers’ Guild luncheon.

Sinking to Their Level

By: Publius in Liberals, Signs of the Times, Pop Culture on 6:22 pm

Sean Hannity and Mark Levin both appeared on Brian Whitman’s WABC show in New york today to speak with the outspoken Alec Baldwin. Utter hilarity ensued…

HANNITY: Are you the guy that said of our vice president, while we’re at war, while we’re leading troops in harm’s way - are you the reckless, third-rate Hollywood actor who said that Dick Cheney is a terrorist? Are you the guy . . .

BALDWIN: Yes I am.

HANNITY: … who said to stone Henry Hyde to death? Are you the guy who said our president is a CIA mass murderer? I wanted you to come on the program and defend that, you gutless coward.

BALDWIN: At first I thought this was a joke. But you can hear all the acid venom spewing hatred. It is Sean Hannity. [END EXCERPT]

The exchange got even hotter when Mark Levin joined in.

LEVIN: We’ve only just begun - are you 40 or 50 pounds overweight now?

WHITMAN: Oh, C’mon now . . . .

HANNITY: Once and for all you need to be challenged. You want to call our vice president a terrorist - fine. You want to talk about stoning people to death, say it on my program. If you want to be irresponsible and call our president a mass murderer while he’s at war leading troops in harm’s way …

BALDWIN: And what are you gonna do about it, Sean Hannity?

HANNITY: You don’t have the courage to answer questions.

BALDWIN: And what are you gonna do? And what are you going to do about it, Sean Hannity. If I come on your program, what are you going to do?

LEVIN: He’s going to show that you have a two digit IQ - that’s what he’s gonna do.

BALWIN: What are you going to do?

LEVIN: I just told you - you’ve got a two digit IQ.

BALDWIN: And who’s that - who’s your little cabin boy there with you.

LEVIN: I’m not a cabin boy, butt-boy.

Your humble pundit is not exactly sure what was actually accomplished by such a display, but it went a long way in the realms of entertainment.

Wizbang! notes that Baldwin was not up to the debate.
Expose the Left provides the audio from the exchange.
The Moderate Voice,

What’s interesteing is how Baldwin keeps wondering why the host has to have Hannity and Levin on when he has regular listeners waiting on line. But the nature of talk radio is “hot talk” — rage, anger..stuff that gets the adrenalin going. Still, if you can detatch yourself from the whole talk radio culture that we’re all conditioned to now in this country, and you look at it from the standpoint of political debate, you wonder: how did political discussion get so absolutely poisonous in this country?

Intolerance Kills

By: Publius in Islam, Afghanistan on 11:43 am

Welcome to the 12th Century!

Muslim Mob

As Michelle Malkin reports via the AP,

KABUL, Afghanistan – Hundreds of people protested in Afghanistan on Monday against a court’s decision to drop a case against a man who converted from Islam to Christianity, while an official said discussions were underway to determine when he would be released.

Officials said the case was dropped Sunday partially because of concerns that Abdul Rahman is mentally unfit to face trial. The move also followed strong pressure from Western governments.

An Afghan official closely involved with the case told The Associated Press that the 41-year-old would be released, but authorities were debating how and when it would be done.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the case, had earlier said that a decision may be made by Monday and that Rahman would not have to remain in jail while prosecutors investigate whether to bring another case against him to the courts.

Rahman is being held at Kabul’s notorious high-security Policharki prison. He was moved there Friday after inmates at a police detention facility reportedly threatened him.

A warden at Policharki said Rahman was still at the jail Monday, detained in a concrete cell by himself.

Muslim clerics have threatened to incite Afghans to kill Rahman if he is freed, saying that he is clearly guilty of apostasy and deserves to die.

Monday’s protest ended peacefully about two hours after it started in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif, said police commander Nasruddin Hamdrad. The protesters chanted “Death to Bush!” and other anti-Western slogans, while the police stood guard.

Authorities have barred journalists from seeing Rahman. But on Sunday, officials gave an AP reporter an exclusive tour of Policharki, which houses some 2,000 inmates, including about 350 Taliban and al-Qaeda militants.

Guard the Borders Weekly BlogBurst

By: Publius in Guard the Borders BlogBurst on 11:17 am

This past week there were numerous demonstrations across the country, as immigrants were organized to protest any federal legislation that would tighten immigration enforcement. The rallies were organized by unions, church groups, socialist activists, civil rights advocates, and immigrant organizations to demand free immigration rights as their due and protest the “unjust laws” of our nation. Los Angeles had the nation’s largest mobilization of immigrants ever, which the LA Times described as “boisterous” and “spirited” and “mostly peaceful”: “The marchers included both longtime residents and the newly arrived, bound by a desire for a better life and a love for this county.” (”Newly arrived” being a politically-correct euphemism for “illegal”.) The estimated crowd of 500,000 proudly carried tens of thousands of Mexican flags, which belied the blissful claim that they are “bound by a love for this country”.

“There has never been this kind of mobilization in the immigrant community ever,” said Joshua Hoyt, executive director of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights. “They have kicked the sleeping giant. It’s the beginning of a massive immigrant civil rights struggle.”

In Georgia, many Latinos protested a newly passed bill aimed at curbing illegal immigration by not working or shopping for the day. Guess what? The state’s economy didn’t collapse! A small American rally in Temecula, CA, focused on border security and law enforcement. We also saw peaceably demonstrating American citizens attacked by an unruly crowd of pro-illegal immigration and socialist protesters in Indiana.

This week, our Senate continues the debate on illegal immigration, with an upcoming vote on the McCain-Kennedy Amnesty bill. And, pressing for his “guest worker” program, our President repeats the tired (and untrue) refrain that our country needs these workers to do what Americans won’t:

“We must remember there are hardworking individuals, doing the jobs that Americans will not do, who are contributing the economic vitality of our country,” the president said in his weekend radio address.

However, the Minuteman Party has responded:

No longer content to sit on the sidelines while politicians sell out our sovereignty and turn our citizenship into a yoke of slavery in the service of foreign interests, we are fighting that government “of the people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish from the earth”.

What is this precious sovereignty that we need to safeguard? Why is it central to our existence as a free nation? And how does it relate to our national security? Considering the fact that pro-illegal immigration forces were able to mobilize hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens to demonstrate their demands for what Americans have and their rights to the privileges of our citizenship, it is imperative that we understand how much we have to lose. Because once lost, it can never be regained. These issues have been addressed in layman’s terms in a series of excellent essays by LinknZona. The first in the series defines security and sovereignty and how the two are irrevocably linked (reproduced below with permission). Links to the follow-on essays provide a step-by-step examination of the true impact of unchecked immigration and permissive illegal immigration on our sovereignty as a nation. Security and Sovereignty No. 1: What Are We Talking About?

This is the first post in a new series addressing the security and sovereignty of the United States. These words are related but quite different in meaning and nuance. Security is a noun meaning safety, the absence of danger or risk. In the national context, it means vigilance and actions taken by the government to prevent invasion, attack, and the sabotage, spying, and treason that accompany them; the totality of measures taken to keep the nation safe and free from danger. More realistically in today’s world, rather than free from danger; security means to minimize the risks or threats. Sovereignty is a noun and means a government free from external control or the authority of one country to govern another. An important point is the source of sovereignty. The historical model of a kingdom was that the king ruled by divine right. In a totalitarian state power is gained and then held by force and coercion. In democratic countries, i.e. the US, power derives from the people. There are additional forms and various gradations between the definitions, but for the purposes herein, we will emphasize totalitarian and democratic countries. One shudders at the thoughts of countries without a history of security: Poland, Israel, and the Low Countries – these have been invaded throughout history and repeatedly have lost their sovereignty. That they stand free today is a tribute to man’s strength and hope. Jordan kicked the Palestinians out of their country and chased them into Lebanon and for more than a quarter of a century Syria held de facto sovereignty over most of Lebanon. In contrast, the United Kingdom has remained a sovereign nation for centuries. A country can lose its sovereignty in several ways. By conquest, by a division or a ceding as in a small country caught between two powerful neighbors, by appeasing an aggressive neighbor with territory or control, or by allowing migration, or infiltration of peoples from one country into another one until sufficient numbers and power are gained by the infiltrators to demand partitioning or complete control. Thus, we see the link between security and sovereignty. In the ever dangerous world in which we live, sovereignty cannot be maintained without security. Therefore, if sovereignty is the will of the people then they must devise and organize a national strategy for security. Sovereignty requires security from war and conquest, from domination by other countries and partitioning or territorial ceding, security from threats and intimidation, and security from infiltration.

Security and Sovereignty No. 2: Setting the Ground Rules A summary of the sworn duty of the one person most responsible for our security and sovereignty: the President. Security and Sovereignty No. 3: The President’s Duties In light of the President’s Constitutional duties to our national security and sovereignty, this essay assesses how he is meeting the obligations of his duty. Security and Sovereignty No. 4: How Many Illegal Aliens are in America? Frighteningly enough, no one really knows. The sheer volume of illegal border crossings makes any figure a guesstimate. How secure can our country be when millions of unknown foreigners are crowding our towns and cities? Security and Sovereignty No. 5: A Tale of Two Small Businesses What’s the overall economic impact of illegal aliens on American workers and taxpayers? The short answer is they cost America hundreds of billions of dollar a year. Security and Sovereignty No. 6: A Threat to Our Two Party System and Some Steps We Can Take This essay outlines the threat of illegal immigration to our sovereignty and what we might do to save America. The short answer is that we must eliminate illegal immigration, preserve our two party system, and restore respect for the rule of law in America. These essays are offered to our readership because knowledge is power, and forewarned is forearmed. If the pro-illegal alien crowd is geared up towards positioning wide open borders as a “massive immigrant civil rights struggle” then we have to make sure that the “sleeping giant” they’ve kicked is not ignorant of the ultimate costs of his continued inaction. This giant doesn’t have the luxury of sleep anymore - there is too much at stake.
